Welcome to APIC 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.
On behalf of Malaysian Petrochemical Association, I would like to welcome and express our sincere gratitude to our respected speakers, delegates, exhibitors, sponsors and partners for your show of support to this upcoming event.
Oil and gas and the petrochemicals has been one of the leading industries in Malaysia and in the region. Since the early 1990s, the industry has flourished with significant investments, making it one of the major contributors to the Malaysian economy. The huge level of investment in the sector resulted in petrochemicals capacity rising, boosted by the prevalence of abundant feedstock and burgeoning Asian demand.
The Malaysian Government has shown tremendous support towards the development of the petrochemical industry by providing a conducive ecosystem for the industry to thrive. The introduction and implementation of incentive packages ensures companies maintain their competitive edge whilst adding value to the oil and gas resources in Malaysia. The development of modern infrastructure to support and enhance petrochemical activities has fuelled the growth of local petrochemical industry, supporting its aspiration for Malaysia to become a regional hub for petrochemicals.
Petroliam Nasional Berhad, (PETRONAS), Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, also plays an instrumental role in advancing the petrochemical industry in the country. PETRONAS’ three major petrochemical facilities, strategically located in Gebeng, Kertih and Pasir Gudang, contributed significantly towards the nation’s petrochemical growth. The development brought about a host of benefits to the nation and country, including creation of jobs, improvement in infrastructure and transfer of technology and skill.
The petrochemical industry is gaining significance in the light of increased economic activity, urbanisation and rising middle income leading to higher purchasing power. Driven by strong demand, these rapidly evolving megatrends are all key factors and opportunities for the petrochemical industry to flourish. The focus will be on inventions aligned with global megatrends which will ultimately generate future growth platforms. These include alternative feedstock and energy sources, improved energy storage, intelligent materials, among others. These platforms will allow the chemical industry to derive unique products which are essential for the growth of the industry.
In the midst of the prospects these megatrends present, potential competition from other regions pose a threat to the Asian petrochemical industry. The shale revolution has resulted in a robust petrochemical capacity expansion in the United States and the products are destined for Asia where the demand is high and rising rapidly.
As such, to ensure the sustained growth of the petrochemicals industry, it is crucial that policy-makers together with the petrochemical industry players and its key stakeholders collaborate to enhance the competitiveness of the industry while preserving the environment.
APIC 2018 aims to bring together key business and industry experts to discuss and deliberate insights and critical analysis from across the value chain. Featuring the theme “Creating Value Through Collaboration”, APIC 2018 seeks to discover the untapped opportunities for cooperation across the industry for us to have a deeper understanding of the market and to better equip ourselves with the right solutions to propel the industry further. This will undoubtedly pave the way for players to leverage on each other’s strengths and to learn faster in order to drive, capture and create more value. As a result, the industry will continue to prosper and will be better prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
It is therefore with great pleasure that I invite you to meet us at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 20th to 21st August 2018 for APIC 2018, to gain more insights, engage with prominent industry leaders and explore all the potential and possibilities through the lucrative Sessions, Exhibition along with its networking opportunities, and at the same time enjoy Malaysia’s warm hospitality.
AKBAR MD THAYOOB
President, Malaysian Petrochemical Association (MPA)
On behalf of the Organising Committee of Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) 2018, I would like to wish a warm “Selamat Datang” - Welcome to Kuala Lumpur, the main gateway to Malaysia. A city of contrast and diversity where variety of cultures are all infused into one melting pot which offers unique experience to its visitors.
It is indeed an honour to be chairing this prestigious conference and exhibition, set to take place on the 20th to 21st August at the world-renowned Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. APIC 2018 is poised to become the premier platform for industrial networking, gathering key industry players, policy makers, technical professionals and business leaders from across the chemical value chain to exchange insights, share knowledge and gain updates on petrochemical industry’s latest developments.
Through its growing population and prosperity, Asia has earned a reputation as a highly competitive region. Due to its high connectivity, the availability of its developed infrastructure and facilities, the cost competitiveness of utilities, labour and feedstock and the strong government support towards the petrochemical industry Asia has become the largest market for petrochemicals. Malaysia as one of the growing markets in Asia is also expanding its petrochemical industry in tandem with the regional demand. As one of the key players, PETRONAS has invested into its 3rd integrated petrochemical complex known as Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor which is currently progressing on schedule and expected to be on stream by 2019.
Living in this VUCA world (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous), the need for industry players to foster collaboration among the industry ecosystem is becoming more crucial. This includes industry players, manufacturers, service providers, government agencies and consumers to fortify the growth of our petrochemical industry. Against this backdrop, APIC 2018 carries the theme ‘Creating Value through Collaboration’ which highlights the importance of forming meaningful partnerships to develop the industry.
We have put together an attractive conference programme that will stimulate engaging discussions and provide you with an avenue to discuss issues surrounding the industry. APIC 2018 has lined up prominent speakers and industry experts who will trigger meaningful discussions, share valuable insights, and explore potential opportunities for future collaborations.
I would like to thank the Malaysian Petrochemicals Association (MPA), PETRONAS as the Corporate Supporting Organisation and the APIC organising committee for the joint effort in preparing and bringing APIC 2018 into fruition for the benefit of the industry as a whole. I would also like to extend my appreciation to our event sponsors and partners including Nylex (Malaysia) Bhd, BASF, Lotte Chemical Titan, AgriChem, Reliance Industries, Wakomas, IHS Markit, Nexant, Argus Media, Tecnon Orbichem, Platts, ICIS, MIDA and others for their support in realising APIC 2018.
